3/15/1815 - The first formal organization of the Bangor Fire Department takes place.

1838 - Engine numbers 5 & 6 are added to the Bangor Fire Department.

1840 - Engine Co # 6 ("Osceola") is donated to the City by Henry A. Head Esq. This engine's make is unknown. We believe it was small as it was replaced with the old Engine #4 in 1846. This engine was located on court Street.

1847- Hincley & Egery Company are contracted to build Engine #6. The cost is $1,300.00 (Hand Tub) Repairs to the engine in service would have cost $1,219.96.


1849- Engine #6 (Tiger 6) house is built on State St near Exchange St. (This station burned in the 1911 fire)


1854- The Bangor Fire Department is re-organized and placed on paid status. A new Engine #6 is built (type unknown) There were only 2 engines protecting the city at this time (Engine 6 & Engine 3) They are one of the earliest in the country to go onto paid status (1 year after Cincinnati)

1855-  The first record of a fire death (Miss Rand)

1856 - 1857 - The records show that there were 135 firemen and 6 engines in the city (3 in service, 3 reserve) Engine #3 "Eagle", Engine #4 "Amory" & Engine 6 "Tiger".

1861- First steam engine in Bangor (assigned to Union #1)

1863-  First uniforms, rubber coats and hats are ordered.( we think the coats are still back ordered)

1864-  First Horses bought by the BFD.

1864-  Tiger #6 sold for $256.00

1865-  Engine #6 responds to the Brewer Shipyard fire

1866-  Second steam engine bought (assignment unknown)

July 1867- Department re-organized and Engine #6 is disbanded.

1876 - The last hand engine was take out of service  "Eagle" #3.

1890's-  New Station built for Engine #6. (unknown when it was re-activated) The location is at the corner of Center and Montgomery Streets.

April 30, 1911 - 'Great Bangor Fire' - Most of Downtown Bangor is burned due to a fire that started on the water front. Mutual aid came from as far away as Portland.

Oct 12, 19379 a.m. Asst Chief Constantine with Engine  #115 called to Central St. to wash away the two pools of blood on the street in front of the Dakin's store. Caused by the G-Man shooting of Al Brady and Clarence Lee S****** Gangsters. Used 2 pieces of 2 1/2 hose.
Note: Al Brady was public enemy #1 at the time.

July 1987-  The second Station #6 is built. The location was at the corner of Kenduskeag Avenue and the Griffin road (16 Griffin Road). This station is closed in May 2009.

November 11, 1997-  Station #6 is assigned it's first ambulance. It is assigned as Rescue 6.

September 2008 - New construction on our new Station begins. The site is on Griffin Road, just towards Broadway from our station.

May 15, 2009 - New Sation 6 is opened up at 11 Griffin Road. The station is assigned a 105' Pierce ladder - designated as Ladder 6. We are also housing Engine 6, Rescue 6, Tanker 6, and a spare rescue.

December 2009 - New Tanker 6 goes into service, replacing a BFD 'shop-made' truck that had served us well.

November 2014 - Engine 6 & Engine 5 are replaced with new trucks. This is the first time in modern history that new engines have been purchased and placed into a sub-station.
This is the beginning of the history of Station #6 and the units that operated from it. As I get information, I will add it to the list below.
This is the bell that was removed from the tower at the Center St station. It now sits on the lawn on Griffin Road..
